IJ chakra series

Hey tribe!

Hope you had a great week!  This week, we’re shifting our focus to our second chakra, the Sacral Chakra!

Ready to dive in?  Take in a deep breath…let’s do this!

Sacral Chakra

  • Sanskrit Name:  Svadisthana
  • Location:  Just below the navel and incorporates our genitals
  • Color:  Orange
  • Element:  Water
  • Sound/Mantra:  VAM
  • Lotus Petals:  6

The Sacral Chakra is our second chakra and has to do with all of the feels.  This chakra not only controls our emotions, but also our creativity, sexual desires, pleasure, and overall energy.  Since Svadisthana’s element is water, it also relates to our liquid bodily functions:  circulation of the blood, urinary elimination, sexuality, and reproduction.  The water element also brings with it the qualities of water:  formlessness, fluidity, surrender, and flow.

When your Sacral Chakra is unblocked, you’ll feel patient, enduring, nurturing, and secure.  You may feel more intimate with your family, friends, community, and planet.  It probably helps that we did all that grounding last week too with our Root Chakra. 😉  With a balanced Sacral Chakra, you can feel more passionate, creative, have a healthier libido, optimistic, and more open.

When your Sacral Chakra is blocked, you can have low libido, fear of intimacy, lack of creativity, and feel isolated.  Attachment issues, being timid, hypersensitivity, and having trust issues are other traits of a closed Sacral Chakra.  Other signs of imbalance include:

  • Lower back and knee pain
  • Leg cramps
  • Kidney and urinary issues
  • Poor circulation
  • Stiffness in the hips
  • Malfunction of reproductive organs
  • Menstrual difficulties
  • Lack of interest in food, desire, passion, sex, and life

There is also the chance of having an overactive or underactive Sacral Chakra.  Overactive signs include over-emotional, fixated on sex, neediness, emotionally dependent, and manipulative.  Someone with an underactive chakra may be completely disconnected and cold towards others.

This chakra is our most important emotional center.  Because of this, we are likely to experience an imbalance here at one time or another.  Luckily, you have me here to give you some simple tips on how to balance this important chakra:

  1. Hip-opening yoga poses – yoga will be on our list throughout this whole series, so might as well make it first! We store our emotional and physical tension in our hips. This is why hip-opening poses directly connect with our Sacral Chakra.
  2. Dance – yup, this one made it to the Sacral Chakra list too! Move those hips, whether you have “moves” or not!
  3. Tone it up – keep your muscles strong and healthy. Toning our muscles help let go of unnecessary muscular gripping and tension. Try building your core, especially the lower abdominal where this chakra resides.
  4. See orange – envision your Sacral Chakra glowing with a beautiful orange light. Wear orange to help with seeing more orange in your day!
  5. Balance your other chakras – usually, when there’s an imbalance in one chakra, that typically means there are other imbalanced chakras as well. Your throat chakra has a strong connection to your Sacral Chakra. When we get to talking about our Throat Chakra, if you see a connection.
  6. Allow yourself to be creative – express yourself with art. Draw, doodle, paint, create. Be expressive and expansive and find joy in your work!
  7. Let go – it’s hard to do, but learning to let go can be so beneficial. This is an area I have a particularly hard time with. Let go of unhealthy emotions, relationships, memories, and any baggage that does not serve you. Once we learn to let go, we create space and energy for new and better opportunities.
  8. Eat orange – another option is eating orange foods that are associated with the Sacral Chakra! Oranges and tangerines are great options, as well as carrots, pumpkin, and healthy fats like nuts and seeds!
  9. Establish a healing affirmation – choose one of these healing affirmations that resonate with you to use in your yoga practice and/or in your daily life. These affirmations can help manifest what you may need out of balancing your Sacral Chakra.
    • I am allowed to be sensitive.
    • I enjoy my life to the fullest.
    • I am allowed to live joyfully.
    • My body is sacred.
    • I am a creative being.
    • I express my feelings in a positive way.
    • I am kind and compassionate.
    • I welcome sensuality into my life.
    • I breathe in a powerful golden light.
    • It is my birthright to receive pleasure.
    • My intuitive senses are awakened.
    • I attract people who treat me with respect.

For my journalists, I have added some Sacral Chakra journal prompts below to help you dive a little bit deeper with getting to know yourself!  Feel free to choose one (or all) to write about!

Journal Prompts:

  1. What do I feel most guilty about?
  2. What am I craving?
  3. What does it mean to be a creative person?
