Irenic Journey Chakra Series

Hey there tribe!

Hope everyone is healthy, safe, and excited to kick off our first week with the Root Chakra!

If you didn’t read my Chakra Introduction post, make sure you check it out to get an overview of all seven chakras. As promised, we’ll be diving deeper into each chakra with each week’s post.  If you’re wanting to take notes, go ahead and grab your journal/notebook, pen/pencil, take a deep breath, and let’s get right to it!

Root Chakra

  • Sanskrit Name:  Muladhara
  • Location:  Base of your spine
  • Color:  Red
  • Element:  Earth
  • Sound/Mantra:  LAM
  • Lotus Petals:  4 – to associate with the 4 elements (earth, air, fire, and water)

The Root Chakra is the first of our seven chakras and identifies the root of who we are.  This chakra centers around our basic survival needs such as – food, shelter, safety, and money.  It also represents our connection to the Earth and material/physical things.  Muladhara also deals with emotions like belonging, feeling grounded, safe, and accepted.

When your Root Chakra is unblocked, you’ll feel secure, grounded, prosperous, safe, and stable.  This chakra is tied to the elimination system and also, sexual desires.  When this chakra is balanced, you can feel centered and overall happy to be alive!

When your Muladhara is blocked, it can cause worry, fear, doubt, and shame.  It can also cause issues with all things related to the physical world.  Other signs your Root Chakra is out of balance include:

  • Problems with the legs, feet, colon, rectum, lower back pain, tailbone and immune system.
  • Issues with male reproductive parts and prostate gland.
  • Degenerative arthritis, knee pain, sciatica, eating disorders and constipation.
  • Stress about money and financial security.

There is also the possibility of having an overactive Root Chakra.  Traits of overactivity include greed, lust, power, aggressiveness, materialistic and cynical.

Unblocking or opening your Root Chakra, is easier than you think!  Here are some easy tips that you can do to balance your Root Chakra:

  1. See red – envision your Root Chakra glowing in red.  Imagine a beautiful red light glowing from the base of your tailbone, all the way down to your legs and feet, grounding you to the Earth.  You can even wear red clothing to bring more red into your life!
  2. Dance – can’t dance?  Who cares!  Sing and move your body to your favorite music!  Singing adds and extra bonus to starting to work on your throat chakra too. 😉
  3. Take a shower – embrace and love your physical body by completely being present as you bathe.  Using mindful movements act as a shower meditation.  Remembering to breathe long and deep as you cleanse your body.
  4. Walk it out, Zen style – do a walking meditation.  Focus on connecting to the Earth as you take each step.  This is also a great way give your mind a break!
  5. Take care of your feet – go get a pedicure, or give yourself one!  Give yourself a foot massage, or if you have a partner, ask for them to give you one!  What better way to take care of your grounding roots than by pampering your wonderful feet!
  6. Eat red – another option is eating red foods that are associated with the root chakra!  Beets, parsnips, rutabaga, apples, pomegranates, and proteins (such as red beans for my herbivores and lean red meats for the carnivores).
  7. Get down on your yoga mat – practice yoga, duh!  Seated postures, standing poses, and hip openers are great yoga poses to help unblock your root chakra.  This week’s practice will focus a lot on standing and Warrior Poses.
  8. Establish a healing affirmation – choose one of these healing affirmations that resonate with you to use in your yoga practice and/or in your daily life.  These affirmations can help manifest what you may need out of balancing your Root Chakra.
    • I am safe.  The universe protects me.
    • I am full of life energy.
    • I am grounded.
    • I love life.
    • I am confident.
    • I am stable.
    • I am strong.
    • I am loved.
    • I love my body.
    • I am grateful.
    • I am wealthy.
    • I am courageous.

Below, I have added some Root Chakra journal prompts, if you want to journal while on your chakra journey. This journaling activity can help you dive a little bit deeper with getting to know yourself!  Feel free to choose one (or all) to journal about!

Journal Prompts:

  1. I feel safe when I…
  2. Fear is just…
  3. My body allows me to…
  4. Nature speaks to me with…

  6. How can I be present with this phase in my life?
